A quality day care service for health impaired or disabled adults. The Center provides a broad ranging therapeutic program including personal care, health monitoring, medication administration, individualized care plans, lunch and snacks, exercises, music, crafts, and intergenerational activities. Provides a safe daytime environment for the frail adult while giving their family caregiver a break. The Center is located in historic downtown

This organization operates solely through charitable contributions in the form of grants and donations from various sources.

Provides day support and residential services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Services include personal care, monitoring health and safety and programming in independent living, academic skills, socialization and recreation. Residential services include sponsored placements, in-home support and respite. The Arc also provides a four-week summer camp program for adults and children.

A vital community organization serving a large and diverse population through a variety of programs and services including; Schoolage Child Care, Preschool Child Care, Day Camp, Aquatics, Fitness, Health and Wellness, Youth and Adult Sports and Recreation, Outdoor Adventure, and more. The YMCA offers scholarships and fee reductions for memberships and programs based on financial need.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Central Virginia recruits, trains and supports volunteers to serve as advocates for abused and neglected children in the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford and the counties of Amherst, Bedford, Campbell and Nelson (the 24th Judicial District). Juvenile Court Judges appoint CASA volunteers to investigate what is in the best interest of the child and to help get the child placed in a safe, permanent home as soon as possible. CASA volunteers can help achieve positive outcomes for children by being their “Voice” in court.

The mission of the CVAAA, as a designated Area Agency on Aging is to carry out the legislative intent of the Older Americans Act by providing supportive services such as meals, transportation, care management, homemaker assistance, elder rights advocacy and legal services for age 60 and older citizens to enable them to remain in their homes, to be active in the life of the community, and to live life to the fullest degree that each is able.

A volunteer emergency service agency that provides emergency services to needy persons within the Altavista/Hurt/Gretna area and is sponsored by the Altavista Area Ministerial Association.
Emergency needs could be for food, shelter, utilities, clothing, medicine, fuel or gasoline.

Provides medical, nursing, dental, pharmacy and health education services to patients who lack access to health care for financial reasons. Patient income must be low income as measured by annual U.S. Government standards and the patient must not have insurance, Medicare or Medicaid for the services being rendered.

The Gateway, started in 1988, provides residential substance abuse recovery and supportive services to homeless men who are in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Supportive services include: food and shelter, clothing, substance abuse and choice theory/reality therapy-based counseling, budgeting skills training, employment readiness, resume composition, job search, assistance in obtaining healthcare and medications, credit report review & repair, anger management training, relapse prevention, case management and more. The Gateway is a Section 8 housing facility with room for 24 men. The Gateway provides the tools its clients need to rebuild their lives and maintain ongoing substance abuse recovery. It greatly exceeds the national average in its success rate, providing hope for families devastated by substance abuse.

Serves ages 2 through 5 for child care/preschool and offers before/after care to our graduates/siblings up to 12 years old. Center hours are 6:30 a.m through 5:30 p.m Monday -Friday. The Mission of Mary Bethune Academy is to provide a quality program which promotes a nurturing and enriching early childhood learning experience, encourages accomplishment and strives for excellence for children during their formative years.

Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lynchburg area provides healthy meals, friendly smiles, and warm reassurance to the local homebound community This is done by providing assistance to the frail elderly and younger disabled shut-ins by delivering them a balanced, nutritious, hot meal (lunch) five days per week. The program is for those persons who cannot cook for themselves, have no one to cook for them and may be unable to leave their homes for meals. This service allows people to stay in their homes, maintain some independence, and avoid living in costly institutions.

Otter River Resource Center, Inc. (434) 369-6920
The primary purpose is to provide assistance and support that enables people over the age of eighteen who have intellectual disabilities to attain new skills and/or retain current skills. This service will be a combination of center-based services and community outings. The skills training will include, but will not be limited to, personal hygiene, health and safety, social skills and daily living skills. The services provided for each client will be decided ultimately by the client.

With the help of everyday citizen volunteers, skilled trades people, the support of local business and major corporate partners, Rebuilding Together affiliates in

's largest cities and smallest towns make life considerably better for thousands of low-income homeowners and the communities in which they live by completing 10,000 projects per year. Rebuilding Together has programs dedicated to energy efficiency, veteran's housing, aging in place and gulf coast reconstruction.

The Salvation Army is an evangelical part of the Christian Church. It serves the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell and the cities of Bedford and

: providing financial assistance to families, shelter to the homeless, transitional housing for women & children on the way to independence, day care for children of welfare to work and low income families. The Salvation Army's Community Feeding Program is open seven days a week, 365 days a year, serving breakfast and dinner to the residents and to anyone in the community who needs a nutritious meal. The Army assists in natural disasters in our area and beyond. A number of youth and adult character building programs are offered including a nine week summer day camp program and a residential camping program for youth and adults.
