In early 1999, we lost one of the special souls who truly dedicated her life’s work to serving others through her work with us. Nancy L. Sorrells worked for the United Way of
Central Virginia for 24 years before losing her battle with cancer. As reflected by her character and personal drive to serve,
Nancy worked tirelessly during her various treatments and demonstrated wonderful courage and fortitude.
In special remembrance and celebration of
Nancy ’s dedication, United Way's Board of Directors approved the establishment of an annual award in her honor that would recognize excellence among social service professionals. The winner of this award will be selected by volunteers and receive a special award at our Volunteer Recognition Meeting in February/March. In addition, his or her name will be engraved upon a plaque to hang in United Way's Conference Room that reads as follows:
The Nancy L. Sorrells Memorial Award
Presented annually to a staff member of a human/social service organization
whose professionalism and dedication reflects those characteristics
embodied by
Nancy during her twenty-four years of service to
United Way of
Central Virginia.
All nominees will receive a certificate of appreciation and recognition of their work.
We encourage you to recommend one of your employees for consideration for this unique and prestigious honor. We ask that only one submission per organization be made per year. Applicants that have been nominated previously, but have not received the award, may be nominated again. All applications must be received by January 22, 2010. If you have any questions regarding the application or award, please contact
