Partnerships & Initiatives that Strengthen Our Community

It is United Way’s mission to be recognized as the premier organization for identifying the community's critical human needs and addressing those needs through aggressive fundraising and effective allocation of resources. Our vision is to create a caring community which empowers its people to reach their potential.

This section of our website gives an overview of the initiatives in which United Way has played a central role.

Community Response Team
Convened by United Way the afternoon of September 11th to mobilize the social service sector in support of our community members following the terrorists’ attacks.

Created a support and information phone line that was active on September 12th.

Held multiple community programs for families and individuals with an emphasis on children’s needs.
Made available counseling and support services throughout the community.
The Community Response Team reconvened following the storm that spawned tornadoes in Bedford and Campbell sevel years ago. Whenever a crisis strikes our area, you can count on United Way's Community Repsonse Team to be there!

Success By 6

An early childhood initiative with the vision that all children will be prepared to succeed when they enter school.

A collaboration of area school systems, businesses, social service providers, Centra Health, and others are implementing two strategies to realize this vision:

Enhance the quality of area child care through the establishment of standards of care and greater emphasis on improving language and social skills for children.

Build parents’ abilities to meet the development needs of their children through improved parent training and learning opportunities.

The initiative will measure the success of its work to ensure we are improving the future for our community’s children.

Spot the Bus
In early 2002, United Way made a commitment to strengthen the “Spot the Bus” program in Appomattox. This project, established by the Appomattox School System, makes books available to low-income children throughout the county and brings literacy programs directly into neighborhoods to encourage children to read and maintain their academics.

Community Involvement
In addition to the above initiatives, United Way staff members work on many different community committees, task forces, and coalitions. The issues being examined by these groups include health care, youth services, needs of our seniors, regional cooperation, welfare reform, homelessness issues, and domestic violence.
