Day of Caring, now in its 15th year, is a community-wide event benefiting non-profit agencies in Central Virginia (Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell Counties and the cities of Bedford and Lynchburg). Each year, Day of Caring unites generous, community-focused people under the common mission of creating REAL, LASTING change in the lives of children, families, and seniors, right here where we live. The event proves that when we as individuals think outside ourselves, we have the power to facilitate change.

On Day of Caring, volunteer teams, organized by local companies, schools, families, and individuals, work together to complete projects and conduct special programs for local non-profit human service agencies who, much of the time, lack the necessary resources to tackle such important initiatives themselves. Projects range from reading to children at child care sites and engaging them in outdoor activities to landscaping an elderly person's front yard and washing windows at the YWCA. Participating in Day of Caring provides an opportunity for building stronger relationships among employees, family members, friends, and other community members, while providing an introduction to United Way's impact and importance in our community.

Last year, over 1600 volunteers from 52 companies and other groups throughout Central Virginia donated their time, a multitude of supplies, and an abundance of caring power to complete over 220 Day of Caring projects. As a result, over 13,800 hours and $270,000 in volunteer time and materials were given back to the community.

The 15th Annual Day of Caring will be held on May 14, 2008. In celebration of this important anniversary year, United Way will also offer special Take Action projects to be completed on June 21, 2008 (for more info on these projects click here).
