New Hire Information

Many people are surprised to learn that the majority of our donations come from individuals in the workplace who are giving back to the community through their payroll deduction gift. We rely upon these individuals to keep our region strong.

We know that people change jobs and seek new opportunities. When this happens, their payroll deduction gift stops and they may not be asked to give again in their new workplace until later in the year. This is the wonderful thing about the New Hires Program.

Here’s how it works:

  • A company is given multiple sets of materials that includes a pledge form and background information about United Way.
  • When an individual is hired, the opportunity to make a gift (preferably through payroll deduction) is offered by a member of the human resources staff or designated person. This is usually completed at the same time that other paperwork is reviewed with the new employee, so it doesn’t need to be an extra step or meeting.
  • The individual fills out a pledge card and a copy of the card is sent to the payroll department and a copy is sent to United Way.

For United Way and the community, the New Hires Program limits the amount of pledges that are unpaid due to job movement. This enables us to increase the amount of funds going to services and programs that benefit the people of Central Virginia.
