Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most common questions we encounter about United Way and our services. If you have a question that's not covered here, drop us a line via our contact page and we'll answer it for you.

If I live outside of Lynchburg, will my contribution help people in my area?
Yes. Your donation supports the United Way of Central Virginia that serves the counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell, as well as the cities of Bedford and Lynchburg. If you live outside of these areas, you may designate your donation to your home community by indicating this on the pledge card.

Why did United Way of Central Virginia eliminate the “Certified Agency” status?
The “Certified Agency” status was eliminated because it had become obsolete. In the past, this status was used to indicate non-Partner Agencies who could receive designations through the United Way campaign. As workplace campaigns have evolved, we now honor designations to all 501(c)(3) non-profit agencies who comply with the Patriot Act.

Certified agencies may only receive gifts specifically designated to them. They receive a basic review to ensure they provide service to our community members, have a financial statement prepared by an independent auditor, and are overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors.

How much of my donation stays in Central Virginia?
Over 99%. Less than 1% is sent out of Central Virginia. This very small percentage is paid as dues to United Way of America and provides valuable services to our United Way that strengthens our work. These activities include development of relationships with national corporations (this resulted in over $250,000 for our community last year!), NFL advertising, technical assistance and training, and government relations activities.

How do I know my donation is well spent?
United Way provides its expertise to the distribution of campaign dollars, the training of agency professionals, and the development of collaborations that will improve the quality of services for our community. Over 100 trained, community volunteers determine the level of funding for each Partner Agency and carefully invest your donation in areas that create visible results that matter to our community. If you are interested in being part of this review team, you may indicate so on your pledge form or contact Joan Phelps.

Was former United Way of America president, Bill Aramony, convicted of fraud?
In February 1992, William Aramony, president and CEO of United Way of America (UWA) resigned under allegations that he conspired to defraud UWA. On April 3, 1995, Mr. Aramony was convicted in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia of various counts of conspiracy, fraud, and filing false tax returns. He was sentenced to 84 months in prison and fined $300,000 for his actions.

United Way of Central Virginia is not a chapter of the national organization. It is autonomous, governed by a local board of directors comprised of volunteers in our community. Additionally, United Way of Central Virginia has an annual audit conducted by Davidson, Doyle and Hilton, its financial statements are reviewed at each Board Meeting, and all expenses are reviewed by the volunteer board treasurer. These items are also posted to this website.
