Regional Impact

United Way of Central Virginia takes serious its role in serving our entire region. Most of the programs we support help individuals and families from all counties and cities in the region. However, we want to share with you a few specific examples of programs directly touching each county/city outside of Lynchburg.

Region-wide
Success By 6 is a collaboration whose purpose is to prepare our children to be ready to succeed when they enter school. With its primary support from the Bank of America Foundation, this vital initiative is bringing together agencies, schools, and businesses to address the needs of our community’s youngest citizens. Through this work, the quality of area child care centers will be enhanced and parents will have easier access to information and resources to help them raise successful children.

Amherst
Community Forum meetings have been held to determine 'what youth need to succeed in life'. The results of these meetings will be used to create plans on improving youth in Amherst County. In addition, information on youth resources is being provided in the Amherst Parks and Recreation Newsletter.

Appomattox
United Way provided funding to expand the “Spot the Bus” program that is coordinated by Appomattox County Schools and Appomattox Literacy Intervention. This program helps low-income children gain access to books and tutoring during the summer. Books are given to the children from the specially designed bus that travels across the county.

Bedford
In partnership with Bedford Social Services, United Way opened the Bedford Community Resource Center in 2001. This center houses more than 10 different service organizations to help people in need in Bedford. Its location and combination of services makes it easier for the residents of Bedford to receive the help they need to help themselves and their families.

Campbell
There is collaboration between United Way of Central Virginia, CASA, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Campbell County Department of Social Services to provide a prevention program for children formerly in the CASA program who remain at-risk of abuse. United Way funds will be used to bring additional funds into the region from the Federal Revenue Maximization Program.

Lynchburg

United Way's role as the support organization for the Homeless and Housing Coalition is an important part of this collaborative effort. Several organizations workk together to develop, sustain, and coordinate a system of services for homeless families and individuals in our area. The overall goal is to increase their self-sufficiency and to end homelessness.

There are many more examples of United Way’s work improving the lives of people throughout our region ~ these are just a few that are creating results you can see!
